The watzmann is the central mountain massif and landmarks of Berchtesgaden. The watzmann means peak, with its 2713 m altitude is also the highest point of Berchtesgaden.
According to legend, the country was once ruled by the cruel king Waze or Wazemann that spread with his wife and children, fear and terror. When he crushed a peasant family with his horse, cursed the woman that God should turn him and his family to stone. Then the earth opened, spitting fire and turned the king and his family to stone. In some legends will be told that the royal and upper lake was formed by the coalesced blood of the royal family.
The impression of a side-lined "family" tells you how often depicted on photos and images from the view from the north; appear from left to right as the watzmann wife, children and the great watzmann, the results from the main peaks.
