August 13th is International Wolf Day.

There are two major species: the Ethiopian wolf (500 specimens) and the gray wolf (250,000 specimens) present in the Northern hemisphere. As social animals, they live and hunt together as a pack ruled by a male alpha and a female alpha. Each wolf's howl is unique, like fingerprints on humans!

They almost became extinct in Europe and the United States. As human populations grew, wolves lost their preys of choices and turned to livestock. Hunters and farmers exterminated them. Conservation policies and reintroduction programs managed to bring them back in Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, and more. However, farmers complain that they represent a threat to their livelihood, and wolves still get shot in many areas.
